Taking extra-curricular courses

It is possible to take courses that are part of other study programmes, either at VU Amsterdam or at another university. These courses will be not be part of you degree programme, but will be marked as ‘extra-curricular’ courses (courses that will be mentioned as extra-curricular courses on your diploma supplement).

PLEASE NOTE: Only Master's courses can be added as extra-curricular courses on the supplement of a Master's diploma.

Registration for extra-curricular courses
VUnet does not display courses from other degree programmes. If you want to take courses from other degree programmes, it depends on the course how you need to register.

Courses outside your degree programme but within the faculty:

  • Contact the academic advisors
  • If these courses are available to you, and if you meet the admission requirements, the academic advisor will make the course available in VUnet, so you can register for it.
  • The grade will automatically be processed in VUnet (only when you registered yourself correctly)

Courses outside your degree programme and outside the faculty:

  • Contact the VU Amsterdam faculty concerned about the possibilities
  • The grade will automatically be processed in VUnet (only when you registered yourself correctly)

Courses outside your degree programme and outside the VU:

  • Contact the university concerned about the possibilities, and register there as an external student (bijvakstudent).
  • You need to hand in proof that you’re paying tuition fees at the VU (Bewijs Betaald Collegeld, or BBC). You can request one at the Central Student Desk
  • When you’ve passed, ask the other university for an official grade list and hand it in at the Central Student Desk
