How to apply?

Admission requirements

Only students from partner universities can take part in an exchange. Free movers cannot not be accepted.

Exchange students for the law programme should have completed at least two years of Law studies.

Exchange students who wish to follow the bachelor’s programme Criminology are preferably currently following a criminological bachelor. For the master’s programme Criminology, students should have finished a criminological bachelor.

It is required that students have a good command of the English language. Please note that for students from some partner universities extra language requirements will be applicable. Chinese students will have to apply for a NUFFIC certificate in view of immigration rules.

Application procedure

Step 1: Nomination

Firstly contact your local international officer about your interest of studying at VU University Amsterdam. In order for your application to be considered, your home university needs to nominate you as an exchange student for the coming academic year.

Deadline for nomination
Exchange semester 1 (September – January): 1 April 2013
Exchange semester 2 (February – June): 1 October 2013

Step 2: Confirmation e-mail
Once we have received a nomination from your home university, we will contact you before the 8th of April to confirm that you can send your application.

Step 3: Application file
Please send the application file per email to: (Office of International Affairs of the Faculty of Law).

Deadline for sending application file
Exchange semester 1 (September – January): 15 April 2013
Exchange semester 2 (February – June): 14 October 2013
(These deadlines are mainly to secure university-accommodation. If you are late, please contact the international office of the faculty of law to find out if we can still consider your application.)

Your exchange application should contain:

  • a complete application form 
  • a nomination from your home university (usually per email) 
  • a current transcript of records
  • a copy of your passport 
  • a digital passport photo

Step 4: Registration student portal VUnet
The International Office from faculty of Law will send you an email confirming your participation including information on how to register via our student portal VUnet. Once you’ve registered we will complete your registration as a students.

Step 5: Application housing / visa
The central international office (admission team) will send you details regarding housing and if applicable visa applications.
  • Housing fee = €200 for 1 semester
  • Visa fee = €350

Deadline for confirming accommodation and payment of the housing fee
