My research is focussed on both investigative criminology and applied criminology. Investigative criminological studies are directed at the psychological aspects in investigations and prosecutions. The main topics are ‘counterspeak’, the use of scenario’s and heuristics. Within these topics focus is on the crime scene investigative process. Also the development and use of behavioral investigative advice is studied, focused on the varies types of offender profiling and linkage analysis.
In the applied criminological research the focus is on the applications of criminological knowledge and methods. The aim is to improve practice through studies of the applicability of criminological knowledge and methods, such as fine-tuned methods of crime analysis.
